Pickleball Paddle Weight Guide: Light, Mid, or Heavy?

4 min read

Weight is one of the biggest things you feel in a paddle. A few tenths of an ounce change power, control, and how your arm feels after two hours. Here is how to choose.

The three weight classes

Power vs control

A heavier paddle puts more mass behind the ball, so you get power with a shorter swing. A lighter paddle is easier to whip around for quick blocks and resets, which rewards touch and placement. Most players do best in the middle, where you get enough pop without losing hand speed.

Arm comfort matters

If you have had tennis elbow or any arm soreness, lean lighter and look for a softer feel. You can always add a touch of weight later with lead tape, but you cannot easily take weight away. Starting lighter protects your arm while you build technique.

A simple rule

New player or unsure: choose a midweight paddle around 8 ounces. SOLA SPIN paddles sit in the 7.9 to 8.2 ounce range, the sweet spot for all-court play, and every one uses a T700 or carbon-weave face. Not sure how it feels in hand?
