How to Put Spin on a Pickleball

4 min read

Spin turns a flat shot into a weapon. Topspin dips the ball down for aggressive drives, and slice keeps it low and skidding. The good news: spin is mostly technique, helped by the right paddle face.

Brush, do not hit

Spin comes from brushing across the ball, not punching through it. For topspin, swing low to high and brush up the back of the ball. For slice, swing high to low and brush under it. Keep a loose grip and let the paddle face do the work as it sweeps across the ball.

Why the paddle face matters

A textured carbon fiber face grips the ball for a split second longer, which lets your brushing motion bite and create more spin. Smooth or worn faces slide off the ball and give you less. Raw T700 carbon holds its texture longer than a painted face, so it keeps biting season after season. We cover face materials in our carbon versus fiberglass guide.

Drills to groove it

Once your technique is grooved, the paddle multiplies it. SOLA SPIN paddles use raw T700 and carbon-weave faces built to grab the ball for serious spin. Keep the face clean and gritty with a quick wipe between sessions to keep that bite.
